I’ve been trying to find an excellent Serbian translation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s poem “All that is gold does not glitter”, but I could not find the complete one anywhere on the web. I was too lazy to go and buy the Serbian translation of the Lord of the Rings and see if I could find the full version there, so I decided to translate it myself.
Here, I share the original and the translated versions. I hope this will save someone else their time, if ever in the same situation as I did.
Original English version
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes, a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
Serbian Latin version
Sve što je zlato ne sija,
I izgubljeni nisu što lutaju svi;
Što je staro i jako ne vene,
duboke korene mraz ne grli.
Iz pepela će ustati vatra,
i svetlost će iz senke nići;
Obnovljena biće oštrica slomljena,
onaj bez krune ponovo će kralj biti.
Serbian Cyrillic version
Све што је злато не сија,
И изгубљени нису што лутају сви;
Што је старо и јако не вене,
дубоке корене мраз не грли.
Из пепела ће устати ватра,
и светлост ће из сенке нићи;
Обновљена биће оштрица сломљена,
онај без круне поново ће краљ бити.
